Area Information for Powell, Ohio

Located in Delaware County, Powell is a lovely Ohio city of about 6,247 residents as of the 2000 Census.

Settlers first came to the area in 1801. They named it "Middlebury," after a community by the same name in Connecticut.

Finally, in 1947, the community was officially incorporated as Powell, after a judge who had presided in the area during the late 1800s.

The population didn't see much growth until the late 1980s, when growth from the city of Columbus overflowed into Powell's territory.

In just 20 years, the population of Powell grew substantially - from 400 to 6,000 residents.

Today, Powell is considered a highly desirably placed to live. For instance, CNN Money and Money Magazine ranked the Ohio city as the 18th best place to lie in the country in 2005!

Although not officially part of the city, Liberty and Orange townships are often considered a part of the greater Powell area.

Powell itself is 3.0 square miles.

Considered an upscale bedroom community, Powell is home to many residents who commute to Columbus for work.

This Ohio city is also well known for its historic central business district, which includes several popular antique stores.
